Opportunities to Serve

These are the organizations that our members are involved with throughout the year.

We would love to have you join us!

[Click on the titles below for more information about these organizations.]

Memphis Family Shelter - This shelter is located in downtown Memphis for homeless women and their children. They work with these families to prepare them for independent living by providing classes in parenting, budgeting, work skills, etc. Each month at our luncheon we collect non-perishable food and household supplies for delivery to the shelter.     Click HERE for MFS Wish List

Page Robbins Center – This facility, located just off Houston Levee and Wolf River Blvd., provides day care for individuals with memory loss due to stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or Alzheimer’s. Our members spend a couple of hours each month celebrating birthdays and visiting with individuals at the center.

Collierville Literacy Council – This center, located just off the Square in downtown Collierville, helps adults with basic reading skills, English as a Learned Language, and preparing for the Graduate Equivalency Exam. Volunteers attend a 10 hour training session which then allows them to be literacy tutors anywhere in the U.S. Tutors meet one on one with individuals, helping them to learn communication skills at a time and place that are mutually agreed upon. No foreign language knowledge is needed for tutors who volunteer for English language duty.

Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees - The Enchanted Forest has been a Memphis tradition for nearly 50 years, with the first forest exhibited in the basement of Goldsmith’s Department Store downtown. There are dozens of beautiful trees sponsored and decorated by area businesses, churches and other volunteers, including our own New Neighbors. Proceeds from the Enchanted Forest support Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center. Our committee coordinates ideas and volunteers to decorate a themed tree each year. The work starts in September to determine a theme for the tree and then make the ornaments. The tree is decorated the week before Thanksgiving, and then is taken down after New Year’s. Our 2009 tree won 1st Place for BEST THEME!  Check out our pictures!

Collierville Food Pantry – On occasion, the food donated at the luncheon is donated to the Collierville Food Pantry.  They also like to receive hotel toiletries for their clients.

Target House  –  This house in Memphis provides families of patients at St. Jude Hospital a home for the entire time the child is receiving treatment.  The families are allowed to stay for as long as needed at no cost.  It is a beautiful facility designed to make a very difficult time as comfortable as possible.  We will collect items for Target House at our October Luncheon.  Click HERE for Target House Wish List.

Collierville Animal Shelter –  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the animal shelter, you are required to attend volunteer training.  These sessions are held once a month.  If interested, call the animal shelter at (901) 457-2670 for more information.

All About Women - Held Saturday May 9, 2009, Downtown Memphis - New Neighbors volunteers helped launch the first All About Women event here in Memphis. Over 3200 women attended the program, benefiting from the great variety of services offered to meet their needs.  This one-day, all-day experience was designed to connect women with over 150 engaging, free resources to balance and renew their lives, and improve their health.  This was NOT your typical conference.  It was inclusive, interactive and fun!  Women involved in DOING things as they followed a circuit through four main sections.  New Neighbors worked the All About Home section featuring activities like creating a family budget, baby-proofing a home, repairing a leaky toilet, preparing healthy meals, recognizing signs of domestice violence, and practicing fire safety at home.  Many Thanks to our NN volunteers for providing their valuable assistance for this important community event!
