About us & our journey

About Us

New Neighbors of the Greater Memphis Area, Inc. is a nonprofit social and service organization dedicated to fostering friendships through shared interests and community service. We provide a warm and inviting space for over 250 members. Whether you are a current or new resident, have experienced life changes, or simply want to meet new friends, we are the group for you! With more than 40 activity groups and events each month, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking a new friend, a new hobby, or want to support one of our charities through volunteering, you’ll find your place here.

Our Journey

Today, members of New Neighbors enjoy a wide range of activities, including dining, games, day trips, wine tasting, gardening, tennis, volunteering, and more.

We host events during the daytime, evening, and weekends to fit all schedules and offer activities for singles and couples. Members enjoy monthly luncheons and welcoming coffee gatherings. There are plenty of opportunities to make new friendships!

We also believe that there’s no better way to become part of the Greater Memphis community than by helping others. New Neighbors gives back through service efforts such as volunteering at local charities and making in-kind and monetary donations. Additionally, New Neighbors hosts fundraising events to support local charities.

New Neighbors was established in 1972 when 26 women founded Welcome Wagon of Germantown “to extend a helping hand to new residents and introduce them to civic and social activities.” In 1994, Welcome Wagon became New Neighbors of Germantown. Our members voted to change the name in 2014 to New Neighbors of the Greater Memphis Area. With this change, we also opened our doors to anyone seeking companionship and a sense of belonging.

In 2019, we changed our motto from “Neighbors meeting neighbors through social activities and community service” to “Friends meeting friends through social activities and community service.”
