Our purpose
New Neighbors of the Greater Memphis Area, Inc. is a non-profit social and service organization that helps build lasting connections in our local community. We provide a warm and welcoming space for 300+ members who are new to the area or are undergoing big life changes such as becoming new parents, empty nesters, or recent retirees. With over 40 events each month, we offer something for everyone—whether you hope to find a new friend, start a fresh hobby, or give back to charities near you.
Our story
New Neighbors was founded in 1972 when 26 women started Welcome Wagon of Germantown “to extend a helping hand to new residents and acquaint them with civic and social activities.” In 1994, Welcome Wagon became New Neighbors of Germantown. The new name stuck for a while, until our members voted to change our name in 2014 to New Neighbors of the Greater Memphis area, signifying how we’ve extended our welcome to the larger community.
Along with this change, we also opened up our doors to anyone looking for companionship and belonging, whether they moved here yesterday or have lived in the area all their lives. In 2019, we changed our motto from “Neighbors meeting neighbors through social activities and community service” to “Friends meeting friends through social activities and community service”.
Today, members of New Neighbors enjoy a wide variety of activities covering sports, games, group discussions, dining, and volunteering. We host events in the daytime, evening, and on weekends to accommodate all sorts of schedules, and have offerings for singles and couples alike. Members regularly meet at monthly luncheons and frequent coffee chats—in short, there’s no shortage of opportunities to build new friendships!
We also believe that there’s no better way to become part of the Greater Memphis community than by contributing your resources to help others. New Neighbors give back through our service efforts like visiting young cancer patients, caring for animals, and tutoring adults. Through Service, we also hold fundraising events to provide financial support for local charities.
